Puppy Guide

How to prepare for your first Golden Retrievers?

Before you bring your first Golden Retriever home, there are a few things you need to check:
Golden Retriever pup - Golden Retriever Puppy Guide

  • Puppy Food
  • Food bowls
  • Water bowls
  • Collar
  • Lead
  • ID Tag
  • Grooming equipment
  • Toys
  • Dog bed

Make sure the home is safe for the new puppy you about to bring. Fertilizer, sharp objects and electrical cords and other household chemicals should be locked away. Even if some Golden Retrievers love to swim, it is not a good idea let them go to the pool.

Meet the breeder

Purchase the Golden Retriever puppy from a registered breeder. Ask a few questions to them:

1. Does the breeder own both the Sire and Dam?
A: If the answer is yes, you should see the sire. If the answer is not, ask for a picture of the Sire and a copy of pedigree. And make sure by Sire the breeder does not mean the neighbour’s dog.

2. Is the puppy social?
A: You will know if the puppy can mix with other animals and people.

3. Are the parent’s elbows and hips OFA certified?
A: This is very important as diseases such as hip and elbow dysplasia can be passed down to puppies.

4. Have any of the puppies in the litter been sick?
A: If the answer is yes, were they diagnosed and treated well?

5.How long the breeder has been in business?
A: The longer, the better.
